Mark Abene a.k.a. Phiber Optik was one of the original members of MOD (Masters of Deception). At one time he was a member of the hacker group LOD (Legion of Doom). He ended up leaving LOD and joining MOD which caused heated friction between the two groups leading to a hacker battle royal in the early 90s. Phiber Optik was the focus of the media back then appear in several magazines later he would become an important character in a book about MOD, “Masters of Deception - The Gang that Rules Cyberspace”.

Phiber Optik spent 1 year in prison for conspiracy and unauthorized access to computer and telephone systems. The Secret Service raided his house on January 24th 1990 taking computer systems and other things. The Secret Service thought that he was partly responsible for a nationwide AT&T crash. Later AT&T admitted that the crash was caused by a software glitch and that hackers had nothing to do with it, so all chargers were dropped.

Phreaking was also said to be a high point of his technical skills set.
