Adrian Lamo

Also known as “Homeless Hacker” planned and executed hacks from one spot to another. He frequented WiFi hotspots in restaurants, coffee houses, bookstores, and even libraries.

Lamo was responsible for unsolicited intrusion / penetration testing on multiple sites. He would test for weakness and then exploit them. After exploiting them he would notify the owner of the resource. Companies hit by this rogue testing were many including: Citigroup, Yahoo!, Cingular, and Bank of America.

His sentence ended January 16, 2007
The hack that earned him a rather large slap on the write by authorities was his penetration of The New York Times. This earned him 6 months of house arrest, 2 years probation, and the privilege to pay $65 Gs in restitution (OUCH!).
